Spartan hegemony

Period in classical Greek history.

It began in 404 BC when Sparta conquered the ancient democracy of Athens in the Peloponnesian War. Sparta didn't annex Athens but established an oligarchy.

Spartan hegemony ended when Thebes defeated them in 371 BC in the Battle of Leuctra.
