Ska punk

Ska punk is a subgenre of punk rock music. It is influenced by the British two-tone and subsequent American "third wave" ska movements, as well as by the American indie or post-punk rock[?] movement. Many of the leading "third wave" bands were in fact ska punk bands, for example Mephiskapheles[?], MU330[?], and the Aquabats[?].

Supplementing the lilting (originally) Jamaican rhythms of ska with punk rock's uncompromising lyrics and brutal guitar chords resulted in a hybrid that slaked the late-millennium teenager's thirst for a moshing groove, plenty of melody via the horns, and thoughtful or irreverent lyrics.

The other major subgenre of ska during the late 1990s was "trad" ska, which romanticized the music's Caribbean origins.

Touring acts who continue to perform today in a ska punk vein include Less Than Jake[?] and New Jersey's Inspecter 7[?].

Some fans hold that ska and reggae pioneer Bob Marley actually originated the genre with his 1977 song "Punky Reggae Party[?]."
