Secretary of State for International Development

In the United Kingdom, the Secretary of State for International Development is a Cabinet minister responsible for promoting development overseas, particularly in the third world. The post was created in 1997 when the Department for International Development was made independent of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Prior to that development had been the responsibility of the Overseas Development Agency, part of the FCO, under the Conservative governments of 1970-74 and 1979-97, and of a separate Ministry for Overseas Development headed by a minister who was not of cabinet rank, during the Labour governments of 1964-70 and 1974-79.
