The Parthian Empire ruled the Iranian plateau and intermittently controlled Mesopotamia between 253 BC and AD 224.

In AD 224, Ardashir[?], governor in the Achaemenid home province of Fars, overthrew Artabanus IV[?] and established the Sassanid dynasty.
