Lumbini

In 563 BC, Lumbini (Sanskrit Lit. the lovely) was the site of Gautama Buddha's birth, in ancient India and modern-day Nepal.

In 1896, Nepalese archaeologists rediscovered a great stone pillar at the site, attributed to Ashoka. Records made by the Chinese pilgrim Fa Xian[?] were used.

Lumbini was also the name of a queen and of her garden in the area.
