Film developing

A piece of photographic film that has been exposed to light in a controlled manner must be developed before it can be used. Development does three things: it transform the latent image into a visible image that can be seen, it makes the visible image permanent and resistant to deterioration with time, and it renders the film insensitive to light. Photographic paper is developed in a similar manner, except it is not loaded into a reel or tank.

(This article does not discuss Polaroid film, which develops itself.)
