The city stands on the site of an ancient Dacian settlement, Napoca[?], which the Romans made a municipium.
The city's inhabitants have been mostly Hungarians and German Saxons since the Middle Ages until 1918 when Transylvania united with Romania. Today almost 20 percent of the inhabitants are Hungarians and very few Germans are still living here.
