It was a significant port in the Middle Ages for trade with the continent of Europe. Some of the Pilgrims who founded Boston, Massachusetts originated or were imprisoned here, before sailing for America on the ship Mayflower from Plymouth, England.
A notable feature of the town is Boston parish church, with its high tower, known locally as the "Boston Stump".
The name "Boston" is a contraction of "Saint Botolph's Town".
